WEEE Regulations for disposal of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment's

The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations are now UK law. All European member states have agreed to proposals to reduce the amount of WEEE deposited in landfill sites. All manufacturers, retailers and distributors of new Electric and Electronic Equipment need to take an active role in reducing the levels of WEEE disposed of in landfill sites.

WEEE reduction in landfill sites is important as it can contain hazardous substances which can contaminate water supplies and pollute soil, which may then result in damage to human health and the environment.

Some WEEE can also be recycled. The amount of available landfill space is decreasing throughout Europe and in the UK, so by keeping recyclable, or re-usable WEEE out of landfill sites it means there is more landfill space available for non-recyclable waste.

Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment

The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations (2006 No. 3289) (WEEE) have been put in place to ensure that products are recycled using best available treatment, recovery and recycling techniques to ensure human health and high environmental protection.

When you have finished with a WEEE product, please do not put in your domestic waste bin, as it will not be recycled. Please use one of the following disposal options instead:

Under the WEEE Regulations, all new electrical goods should now be marked with the crossed-out wheeled bin symbol as shown on our packaging. Goods are marked with this symbol to show that they were produced after 13th August 2005, and should be disposed of separately from normal household waste.

Recycle:
To ensure that your WEEE is recycled in accordance with the regulations, you must ensure that the goods are not put in the bin, but are separately disposed of by taking the WEEE to your local designated collection facility. This would normally be your local civic amenity site (recycling centre). To locate your local site, contact your authority (http://www.recycle-more.co.uk/la/la_detailsla.aspx) or go directly to the listing of approved sites where you'll see they are arranged by county (http://www.valpak.co.uk/dts/page1734.aspx).
